My friends and I have a bit of a dilemma.

We want to start a GSA at our school, but the school board won't sanction the club if we actually call it a GSA, or anything similiar like GLBTQ or Queer Alliance. We come from a pretty conservative community, and we're lucky they're letting us form this club in the first place -- or at least letting us form it without giving us hell. They suggested the name "Tolerance and Diversity Club" but we think that's pretty, well, lame. We were wondering if anyone has any other suggestions, please.

Whether or not you threaten to take legal action depends on whether it's a public school. Is it?

Also, check the school's official rules if you can find them, and if the administration turns out to be violating its own rules, write them a letter and mention it to them.

We have a copy of the school policy. It's well within their rights to call the club non-curricular instead of co-curricular. We know they can't stop us from meeting and organizing a club, but if they decide not to sanction the club, we can't use the PA system to announce school meetings, or hold school-sponsered fundraisers, or receive school funding, or anything like that. We plan to create the club regardless of their decision, but we'd rather have it sanctioned. Their one request was to change the name. We figured it wasn't such a big deal.

That kind of sucks. But you're probably right - no big deal. I know someone on one of these gay-related lj communities is in a group called simply "The Allies" - if you go with that, and someone comes in yelling about defeating the Axis Powers, let us know.

Well, we figured a name change was a small price to pay considering they were letting us keep the original objectives. Everyone around school all ready knows we've been planning a GSA, so it won't even really change anything.

GSA Re-Naming

When we stared our own GSA at our school we had problems like that, and had to rename it. They didn't like "GSA" because they said there was a national GSA group that promoted sex and gay sex, and they thought we would too. So we were ordered to change our name, and also, "GLBTQ" would not be tolerated. So we all came up with ideas and we landed with "SAGA"~Straight and Gay Alliance. I'm not sure if you will be able to use the same name, your school board sounds tougher than ours, but I suggest playing around with the words. We strayed away from things like "Tolerance and Diversity Club" because we already have a "Peace and Justice Club" and needed to make a distinction between the two. I wish you good luck with your name though, and hope you come up with something creative.
